External Wall Insulation Installers

External wall insulation (EWI) is a technique used to improve the energy efficiency and thermal performance of buildings by insulating the external walls. It typically involves installing a layer of insulation material on the exterior surface of the walls, followed by a suitable protective finish.

Insulating external walls is generally considered to be the most effective type of wall insulation since there are no interruptions from internal walls, thus preventing thermal bridging, cold spots, and mould growth.

It is usually more challenging to insulate the exterior walls of older properties with solid masonry walls. In part, this is due to the need for walls of this type to “breathe” so that moisture in the mortar or masonry can escape.

A brick wall’s permeability and quality vary widely. EWI will have little impact on the wall’s performance (except for its thermal performance, of course). Since brick walls are not breathable, any rigid foam insulation can be used in this case.

In either case, our energy saving external wall cladding can be attached to walls and covered with render or timber.

Compared to other insulation methods, EWI has far fewer breaks within the material, reducing the risk of damp. EWI is known as a continuous insulation method.

Insulation for cavity walls, for instance, doesn’t have this quality. It is important, however, that it is fitted by professionals who are properly qualified such as our installers in South Wales.

A large part of whether EWI makes sense for your property depends on its structure and build. It is not usually feasible to line the walls externally of architecturally complex buildings and multi-story buildings due to the extent of tricky detailing.

Additionally, EWI may not be feasible on Listed or period properties with historic features that should be preserved, not destroyed.

It’s also important to take into account individual terraced or semi-detached houses where thicker front walls may stand out from adjoining properties.
